Route Briefing: Amsterdam to Prague
Two hours. That's all that stands between Amsterdam's canal-laced streets and one of Europe's most jaw-dropping medieval cities. The Amsterdam to Prague route is a short-haul gem, served year-round by Czech Airlines, Transavia, and KLM, and when you catch it right — roundtrip under $150 — it feels almost like cheating.
Prague earns its nickname, the City of a Hundred Spires, the moment you step onto Charles Bridge at dawn. Gothic towers frame the Vltava River on both sides, and the city's skyline looks genuinely unchanged from centuries past. The Old Town Square pulls you in with its astronomical clock, the Orloj, which has been marking the hours since the early 15th century. Wander beyond the tourist centre and you'll find cobblestone neighbourhoods where locals actually live, neighbourhood pubs serving some of the finest — and most affordable — lager in the world, and a food scene that goes well beyond dumplings and goulash, though both are absolutely worth your time.
From Václav Havel Airport, getting into the city centre is straightforward and cheap. Public buses connect the airport to the metro network, and from there you can reach virtually any neighbourhood quickly. The whole journey costs just a few Czech crowns, which is a refreshing contrast to airport transfer prices elsewhere in Europe.
Timing matters on this route. Peak season runs June through August when Prague is buzzing with festivals, outdoor concerts, and long golden evenings — but also its biggest crowds. If you can travel in shoulder season, particularly May or September, you'll find the city nearly as vibrant but noticeably quieter, and accommodation prices tend to soften. Winter Prague, draped in Christmas markets and frost, has its own particular magic for those who don't mind the cold.
For the best fares, book four to eight weeks ahead — this short-haul route rewards a little planning without requiring you to commit months in advance. Midweek departures, Tuesday through Thursday, consistently come in ten to fifteen percent cheaper than weekend flights, so if your schedule has any flexibility, shift your travel days and pocket the difference. Standard fares climb above $250 roundtrip, so anything under $150 is genuinely a deal worth jumping on.
Prague rewards the curious traveller who wanders without a rigid itinerary. Get lost across the river in Malá Strana, climb up to Prague Castle for the panoramic view, and end the evening in a cellar bar with a half-litre of Czech pilsner. For two hours of flying from Amsterdam, the return on investment is remarkable.
