Route Briefing: London to Seville
Just two and a half hours from London and you're stepping into one of Europe's most intoxicating cities — that alone makes this route one of the best-value escapes on the continent. Vueling, Ryanair, and British Airways all serve Seville's San Pablo Airport, and when fares dip below £100 return, which they regularly do if you time it right, this is genuinely hard to argue with.
Seville isn't a city that eases you in gently. It hits you immediately — the scent of orange blossom, the sound of heels on cobblestones, the sheer drama of the Alcázar's Moorish architecture glowing gold in the afternoon light. This is the city that gave the world flamenco, and watching a live performance here, in its true home, is something that stays with you long after you've landed back at Heathrow. The cathedral, one of the largest Gothic buildings on earth, houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus and dominates the skyline alongside La Giralda, the former minaret that became its bell tower. Wander the narrow lanes of the Barrio Santa Cruz and you'll understand why people extend their trips by days without a second thought.
From the airport, taxis and buses connect you to the city centre without much fuss, and the journey is short. Once in the city, Seville is wonderfully walkable, and its compact historic core means you can cover an enormous amount on foot.
Timing matters enormously here. April and May are arguably the sweet spot — warm enough to sit outside with a glass of fino sherry and a plate of jamón, but before the fierce Andalusian summer turns the city into a furnace. Semana Santa, the Holy Week processions before Easter, is one of the most extraordinary spectacles in all of Europe, but book flights and accommodation months in advance if that's your target. Summer is peak season and prices reflect it. Autumn, particularly September and October, is an underrated window — the heat softens, the crowds thin, and the city returns to something closer to its everyday self.
For the best fares, aim to book six to ten weeks ahead and lean toward midweek flights. Avoiding UK school holiday windows can shave a meaningful amount off the fare. Flying out on a Tuesday or Wednesday rather than a Friday makes a noticeable difference, and that saving is better spent on an extra evening of tapas-hopping through the city's atmospheric old town.
