Route Briefing: Mumbai to Chicago
Flying from Mumbai to Chicago is a serious journey — around sixteen and a half hours with a connection — but for anyone who's stood on the shores of Lake Michigan and looked back at that jaw-dropping skyline, every minute in the air feels worth it. This is one of those routes where the destination genuinely rewards the effort.
Chicago has a personality unlike any other American city. It's architecturally obsessed in the best possible way — the city essentially rebuilt itself after the Great Fire of 1871 and never stopped experimenting. Walking along the Riverwalk or taking an architecture boat tour along the Chicago River gives you a masterclass in twentieth-century design that no museum can replicate. Speaking of museums, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum are both world-class institutions that could easily consume entire days without you noticing.
Then there's the food. Deep-dish pizza is the obvious starting point, but Chicago's culinary scene runs much deeper — the city has a serious blues and jazz heritage too, so evenings here tend to take care of themselves.
Timing matters on this route. Peak season runs June through August when Chicago is genuinely glorious — warm, buzzing with festivals, and fully alive along the lakefront. That said, summer fares climb accordingly. If you can travel in shoulder season — late April through May or September into October — you'll find the city still beautiful and considerably less crowded, with better chances of snagging a roundtrip fare under $700, which is the benchmark for a genuinely good deal on this route. Standard pricing sits above $1,000 roundtrip, so hunting for that sub-$700 window is worth the patience.
United Airlines, Air India, and Lufthansa are the main carriers to watch. Interestingly, flights routing through European hubs like Frankfurt can sometimes price more competitively than you'd expect, so don't automatically filter those out when searching. Book three to six months ahead for the best availability and pricing — this isn't a route where last-minute deals tend to appear reliably.
On arrival, O'Hare is well connected to downtown Chicago via the CTA Blue Line, which runs directly into the city center and is both affordable and straightforward — a genuinely easy option after a long-haul flight when you'd rather not think too hard. The train drops you right into the Loop, Chicago's historic downtown core, which puts you immediately in the thick of things.
One honest tip: build at least five days into your itinerary. Chicago rewards slow exploration, and rushing it would be a shame after flying this far.
