Route Briefing: Mumbai to Salzburg
There's something almost poetic about flying from one of the world's most vibrant, chaotic, and sensory-overloading cities straight into one of Europe's most serene and perfectly preserved baroque gems. Mumbai to Salzburg is not the most obvious pairing, but that contrast alone makes it one of the more rewarding journeys you can plan.
The flight runs around 16 and a half hours with one or two stops, and the most practical routings tend to go through Frankfurt or Vienna — both of which are well-connected hubs served by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and Emirates. A Vienna connection is particularly satisfying since you're essentially gliding into the Austrian world before you even land in Salzburg. If you can snag a roundtrip fare under $700, grab it without hesitation — that's genuinely good value for this route. Standard pricing climbs past $1,100, so booking two to four months ahead gives you the best shot at the lower end. Flexibility on travel dates helps too.
Salzburg itself is compact, walkable, and almost unfairly beautiful. The old town sits on the banks of the Salzach River, hemmed in by the Alps, and the baroque architecture gives the whole place a theatrical quality — which makes sense, given this is the city that gave the world Mozart. His birthplace on Getreidegasse is one of the most visited sites in Austria, and even if classical music isn't your thing, the atmosphere of the old town is reason enough to wander. The Hohensalzburg Fortress looming above the city is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Central Europe, and the views from up there are genuinely breathtaking.
The city also sits in the landscapes made famous by The Sound of Music, and the surrounding Alpine scenery is every bit as dramatic as you'd imagine. Day trips into the Salzkammergut lake district are well worth the effort.
Timing matters here. Summer, from June through August, brings long days, outdoor festivals, and the famous Salzburg Festival, which draws classical music lovers from around the world — but also crowds and higher prices. December and January have their own magic, with Christmas markets that feel like they were designed specifically to make you believe in fairy tales. Shoulder seasons in spring and autumn offer a quieter, more affordable experience without sacrificing the beauty.
From Salzburg Airport, the city centre is only a few kilometres away and easily reachable by bus or taxi — the airport is genuinely one of the most conveniently located in Europe. One tip worth keeping in mind: if you're connecting through Vienna, consider building in a few hours to explore the city rather than rushing the connection. Two Austrian cities for the price of one flight is never a bad deal.
