Route Briefing: Paris to Amsterdam
Paris and Amsterdam are two of Europe's most beloved cities, and the short hop between them — just an hour and twenty minutes in the air — makes a weekend escape genuinely effortless. KLM, Air France, and Transavia all run this route year-round, and if you catch a good deal, you can be looking at under $120 roundtrip. That said, before you book, it's worth knowing that the train between Paris Gare du Nord and Amsterdam Centraal is a serious competitor here — often cheaper and delivering you straight into the heart of both cities without the airport faff. If the flight price is right, fly. If not, the train is no consolation prize.
Amsterdam rewards visitors who simply wander. The canal ring — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is best explored on foot or by bike, and renting a bicycle is one of those experiences that instantly makes you feel like a local rather than a tourist. The city's museum scene is genuinely world-class: the Rijksmuseum houses one of the great collections of Dutch Golden Age painting, while the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House draw visitors for very different but equally powerful reasons. Book the Anne Frank House well in advance — it regularly sells out weeks ahead.
The neighbourhood of Jordaan, just west of the main canal belt, has a relaxed, village-like atmosphere with independent shops, brown cafés, and street markets that feel a world away from the busier tourist corridors. Amsterdam's food scene leans heavily on Dutch classics like raw herring, stroopwafels, and hearty stamppot, alongside excellent Indonesian cuisine — a legacy of the country's colonial history that has left a genuinely delicious mark on the local table.
From Schiphol Airport, the train into Amsterdam Centraal is fast, frequent, and straightforward — one of the better airport rail connections in Europe, taking roughly fifteen to twenty minutes.
Timing matters here. June through August is peak season, when the city is buzzing but also crowded and more expensive. Spring — particularly April and May when the tulip fields around the city are in full bloom — is arguably the most beautiful time to visit, and shoulder-season prices make it even more appealing. Book your flights four to six weeks out for the best fares on this short-haul route, and keep an eye on Transavia for budget-friendly options that don't always show up on the big comparison sites.
