Route Briefing: Amsterdam to Riga
Just over three hours separates Amsterdam's Schiphol from Riga International Airport, making this one of the most rewarding short-haul routes in Northern Europe. For a city that genuinely surprises most first-time visitors, that's barely enough time to finish a good book before you're touching down in one of the Baltic's most architecturally striking capitals.
Riga holds the remarkable distinction of having one of the largest collections of Art Nouveau architecture in the world. Walking the streets of the quiet residential neighbourhoods beyond the Old Town, you'll find yourself craning your neck at ornate facades decorated with sculpted faces, floral motifs, and elaborate ironwork — it's a living open-air museum that most Western European tourists still haven't discovered. The Old Town itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, layers medieval guild houses, Gothic church spires, and cobbled squares into something genuinely atmospheric. The Latvian capital also has a serious food and craft beer scene that punches well above its weight, leaning heavily on rye bread, smoked fish, and foraged ingredients that reflect the country's deep connection to its forests and coastline.
airBaltic and KLM both serve this route year-round, with airBaltic operating as the dominant carrier given Riga is its home hub. That competition keeps fares honest — a roundtrip under $150 is genuinely achievable if you time it right. Book four to eight weeks ahead and consider flying mid-week, where you can realistically save ten to fifteen percent compared to weekend departures. Standard fares creep above $250, so a little planning goes a long way.
Peak season runs June through August, when Riga's parks and outdoor terraces come alive and the long Baltic summer days give you extraordinary amounts of daylight to explore. That said, visiting in late autumn or winter has its own quiet appeal — the Christmas market in the Old Town is genuinely lovely, and the city feels authentically itself without the summer crowds.
From Riga International Airport, the city centre is easily reachable by bus, making arrival straightforward and affordable. The airport sits close enough to the city that you won't lose much time getting oriented.
The one tip worth taking seriously: don't rush straight to the Old Town on arrival. Give yourself an afternoon wandering the Art Nouveau district on Alberta iela first. It sets the tone for the whole city and costs absolutely nothing — which, in a destination this beautiful, feels almost unfair.
