Route Briefing: Dubai to Abu Dhabi
Let's be honest with you upfront, because that's what a good travel friend does: flying from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is one of those routes where the plane ticket is almost never the smartest choice. The two cities sit roughly 150 kilometres apart, and the Abu Dhabi Express bus connects them comfortably and cheaply, while a taxi or rideshare gets you door to door without the airport faff on either end. When roundtrip fares start around $150 to $250 for a journey that takes just over an hour in the air, the maths rarely work in flying's favour.
That said, if your itinerary genuinely demands it — a tight connection, a specific corporate travel policy, or simply the novelty of it — Etihad Airways is your most reliable option on this sector, and booking directly through them gives you the best shot at finding availability when it does exist.
Now, Abu Dhabi itself? Absolutely worth the trip, however you get there. As the UAE's capital, it carries a different energy to Dubai — more measured, more cultural, arguably more confident in its identity. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most breathtaking pieces of architecture in the entire region, a vast white marble structure that genuinely stops you in your tracks regardless of how many photos you've seen beforehand. Visits are free and open to non-Muslims outside of prayer times, so there's no reason to skip it.
The Corniche waterfront is a lovely place to orient yourself, stretching along the Arabian Gulf with views that shift beautifully at golden hour. Yas Island draws visitors for its entertainment and motorsport credentials, while Saadiyat Island has positioned itself as a genuine cultural destination with world-class museum spaces.
Timing your visit matters here. The UAE winter, running roughly November through March, is when Abu Dhabi truly shines — warm, sunny days without the punishing summer humidity that makes outdoor exploration genuinely uncomfortable between June and September. Major UAE public holidays also see the city buzzing with events and a festive atmosphere.
If you're arriving at Abu Dhabi International Airport, taxis are readily available outside the terminal and are a straightforward way to reach the city centre. The practical tip worth remembering: dress modestly when visiting mosques and cultural sites, and you'll find locals are genuinely warm and welcoming in return.
