Route Briefing: Dubai to Milan
Seven and a quarter hours is a remarkably civilised stretch of sky between two of the world's most glamorous cities, and the Dubai to Milan route delivers exactly the kind of effortless connection that makes long-haul travel feel worthwhile. Emirates operates this corridor with the polish you'd expect, and with roundtrip fares occasionally dipping below $500, there are genuine bargains to be had if you time your search right.
Milan tends to surprise first-timers. It carries a reputation for being all business and boutiques, but spend a few days here and you'll find a city with serious depth. The Duomo is one of those rare landmarks that actually exceeds expectations — climb to the rooftop terraces and you're standing among a forest of Gothic spires with the Alps faintly visible on a clear day. Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, housed in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, is genuinely moving in person, though you'll need to book your timed entry well in advance since slots fill up weeks ahead. The Brera neighbourhood rewards aimless wandering — cobbled streets, independent galleries, and the kind of neighbourhood feel that Milan's glossier districts don't quite manage.
Then there's aperitivo culture, which is essentially Milan's greatest gift to the world. From early evening, bars across the city set out generous spreads of food alongside your Campari or Negroni, effectively turning a drink into a light meal. It's social, unhurried, and very good value.
From Malpensa Airport, the Malpensa Express train connects directly to Milan's central stations, making the journey into the city straightforward and affordable without the stress of negotiating traffic.
Timing matters on this route. Peak season runs June through August when the city buzzes and Lake Como — just an hour north by train — is at its most spectacular. That said, September and October offer a compelling alternative: the weather remains warm, the summer crowds thin out, and Milan's fashion weeks inject a particular energy into the city. Spring is equally lovely if you prefer quieter streets.
For the best fares, book two to four months ahead and lean toward mid-week departures. Avoiding Italian public holidays and flying Tuesday or Wednesday rather than Friday or Sunday can shave a meaningful amount off the standard fare, which climbs well above $800 on popular dates. That saving alone could fund a day trip to Lake Como — which, frankly, should be non-negotiable.
