Route Briefing: Mumbai to Reykjavik
Few routes from Mumbai carry quite the same sense of dramatic contrast as this one — you board in the sweltering chaos of one of the world's most densely populated cities and step off into a land of glaciers, geysers, and skies that glow green at midnight. That journey alone, roughly sixteen and a half hours with a stop, feels like crossing into another dimension entirely.
Iceland rewards the effort in ways that are genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere. Reykjavik is the world's northernmost capital, a compact, walkable city with a personality far bigger than its size suggests — colourful corrugated-iron houses, a thriving music and arts scene, and some of the freshest seafood and lamb you'll find anywhere in Europe. But the city is really just your base for what lies beyond. The Golden Circle route loops you through Þingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly pull apart, past the thundering Gullfoss waterfall and the erupting Strokkur geyser. The Blue Lagoon, that famous milky-blue geothermal pool set against a lava field, sits conveniently close to Keflavik International Airport — many travellers stop there on arrival or departure, which is a genuinely smart way to ease into the time zone shift or send yourself home thoroughly relaxed.
From Keflavik Airport, regular bus services connect to Reykjavik city centre, making the transfer straightforward without needing to arrange a private transfer in advance.
Timing matters enormously on this route. June through August is peak season, and for good reason — you get the midnight sun, accessible highland roads, and the full explosion of Icelandic summer. But those months also bring the highest fares and the largest crowds. If the Northern Lights are your priority, aim for late autumn or winter when darkness returns, though be aware that Iceland's weather is famously unpredictable year-round.
On the booking side, Icelandair, Lufthansa, and British Airways are your most reliable options from Mumbai, with connections typically running through London Heathrow or Frankfurt. Fares under $900 roundtrip represent a genuinely good deal on this route — standard pricing sits well above $1,300 — so it's worth setting a fare alert and being patient. For summer travel especially, booking four to six months ahead is not overcautious, it's simply necessary. Connecting through London or Frankfurt tends to surface the most competitive prices, so compare both hubs before committing. Iceland is not a cheap destination once you arrive, but the sheer otherworldliness of the place has a way of making every rupee feel well spent.
