Route Briefing: Paris to Gothenburg
If you've already done Paris and you're craving something that feels genuinely different without crossing an ocean, Gothenburg is one of those quietly brilliant choices that rewards the curious traveller. The flight from Charles de Gaulle or Orly typically runs around three hours and ten minutes with one stop — connections through Copenhagen or Frankfurt tend to offer the most competitive prices — and when fares dip below $250 roundtrip, this is an almost effortless yes.
Gothenburg sits on Sweden's west coast with a personality distinct from Stockholm's capital polish. It's a port city with real grit and warmth, famous above almost everything else for its seafood. The west coast shellfish — particularly the prawns, oysters, and crayfish — are genuinely some of the finest in Europe, and the city takes them seriously. The Feskekôrka, a fish market built to resemble a church, is one of those landmarks that tells you everything about a city's priorities in the best possible way.
Beyond the food, Gothenburg rewards wandering. The Haga neighbourhood is full of wooden houses, independent cafés, and the kind of unhurried pace that makes you slow down instinctively. The Liseberg amusement park is a beloved local institution that draws visitors of all ages. And if you have even a day to spare, the archipelago just offshore is extraordinary — a scattering of islands accessible by ferry where Swedes have summered for generations.
The city's tram network is reliable and covers most of what you'll want to see, making it easy to get around without a car. From Gothenburg Landvetter Airport, there are regular bus connections into the city centre, which is the most straightforward option for most visitors.
Timing matters here. June through August is peak season when the archipelago truly comes alive and the long Scandinavian days feel almost surreal — light until well past ten in the evening. That said, shoulder season in May or September offers noticeably fewer crowds and often better fares, and Gothenburg's indoor food and culture scene means a cooler visit is far from a compromise.
Book six to eight weeks out for the best prices on this route, and keep an eye on SAS, Air France, and Lufthansa. The sweet spot between Paris's grandeur and Gothenburg's understated coastal charm is shorter than most people realise — and considerably more affordable.
