Route Briefing: Paris to Naples
Two and a half hours from Paris and you've traded the Seine for the shadow of Vesuvius — that's the magic of this route. easyJet, Vueling, and Air France all fly it year-round, and when you catch a deal under €150 roundtrip, it feels almost criminal. Standard fares sit in the €250–€400 range, so it's worth setting a fare alert and being ready to move when prices dip.
Naples is one of those cities that grabs you by the collar. It's loud, chaotic, layered in history, and completely unapologetic about all of it. This is the city that invented pizza — not the polished, Instagram-ready kind, but the real thing: blistered, soft-centred, eaten standing up in a narrow street while a scooter narrowly misses your elbow. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and wandering its ancient Greek street grid, ducking into baroque churches, and stumbling across underground Roman ruins is genuinely one of Europe's great urban adventures.
From Naples, the whole region opens up. Pompeii is a short train ride away on the Circumvesuviana line — a straightforward and affordable journey that deposits you directly at the archaeological site. The Amalfi Coast is reachable by ferry or bus, though summer traffic on the coastal road is famously brutal, so ferries from Naples or Salerno are often the smarter call.
Naples Capodichino Airport sits close to the city centre, and the Alibus shuttle connects the airport to the main train station and central Naples efficiently and cheaply — far more practical than a taxi for most travellers arriving for the first time.
Peak season runs June through August, when the coast is at its most dazzling but also its most crowded and expensive. May and September are the sweet spots — warm enough for the Amalfi Coast, quieter everywhere, and noticeably easier on the wallet. If you're flexible on dates, flying mid-week and steering clear of Italian public holidays can shave a meaningful amount off your fare.
The single best tip for this route: book six to ten weeks out for summer travel. Leave it later and you'll watch the cheap seats disappear while prices climb steadily. Get in early, lock in a low fare, and spend the money you've saved on a long lunch in the Spaccanapoli neighbourhood instead.
