Route Briefing: Paris to Sofia
Just three and a half hours from Paris and you're stepping into one of Europe's most genuinely underrated capitals — Sofia rewards the curious traveller with millennia of layered history, a buzzing café culture, and a cost of living that makes your euro stretch remarkably far. This is the kind of city where a long weekend feels like a proper adventure, and right now, smart travellers are quietly catching on.
The route itself is excellent value. Wizz Air and Bulgaria Air both operate this corridor year-round, with Air France also in the mix for those who prefer a more traditional carrier. A good deal lands under $200 roundtrip, and with Wizz Air running promotional fares fairly regularly, signing up for fare alerts before you book is genuinely worth the two minutes it takes. Aim to book four to eight weeks out — this is a short-haul route where prices respond well to a little forward planning rather than last-minute scrambling.
Sofia sits at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, which gives the city a dramatic natural backdrop that surprises most first-time visitors. The mountain is essentially on the city's doorstep, making it possible to hike in the morning and be back for lunch in the old town. The city centre is compact and walkable, with Roman ruins, Byzantine churches, and Ottoman-era mosques sitting within easy strolling distance of each other — a physical reminder that Sofia has been at the crossroads of civilisations for roughly seven thousand years. The Serdica archaeological complex, visible right in the city centre, is the kind of thing you'd queue for in Rome but can wander through here with barely a crowd.
The thermal springs are a genuine local institution — Sofia is one of the few European capitals with natural mineral springs flowing through it, and the public mineral baths area is worth seeking out. Bulgarian cuisine is hearty and deeply satisfying, with grilled meats, fresh salads, and local wines and rakija that cost a fraction of what you'd pay in Paris.
From Sofia Airport, the metro connects directly into the city centre quickly and cheaply, making arrival refreshingly straightforward — skip the taxi queue and you'll be in the heart of things within half an hour.
Peak season runs June through August when the weather is warm and the city is lively, but shoulder season — particularly May and September — offers pleasant temperatures, thinner crowds, and even better fares. If you've been sleeping on Sofia, this route is your nudge to finally go.
