Just two and a half hours separates the evergreen Pacific Northwest from the sun-soaked sprawl of Southern California, and that short hop from Seattle to Los Angeles might be one of the most rewarding quick escapes in the country. Alaska Airlines and Southwest both fly this route heavily, which means competition keeps fares honest — snag a roundtrip under $100 and you've done very well for yourself, though even standard fares in the $150–$250 range are reasonable for a trip that delivers this much variety.
Los Angeles is genuinely unlike anywhere else. It's a city that somehow contains multitudes — the glittering mythology of Hollywood, the breezy beach culture of Santa Monica and Venice, the art and architecture of neighborhoods like Silver Lake and Culver City, and a food scene that reflects one of the most diverse populations on the planet. You can eat your way through incredible Korean barbecue in Koreatown, outstanding Mexican food across much of the city, and fresh seafood along the coast, all within the same afternoon if you're ambitious enough. The energy here is looser than New York, more sprawling than San Francisco, and entirely its own thing.
From LAX, the FlyAway bus service connects directly to Union Station in downtown, which is a practical and affordable way to get into the city without immediately surrendering to the infamous traffic. That said, if your hotel is in a specific neighborhood, it's worth researching your options in advance — LA's geography rewards a little planning.
Timing matters on this route. Summer, particularly June through August, is peak season when both fares and hotel rates climb. The city is at its most buzzing but also its most crowded. If you want warm weather without the premium price tag, consider visiting in late spring or early autumn — temperatures are still genuinely pleasant and the tourist pressure eases considerably. Winter is mild by most standards and can offer excellent value, especially if you avoid Thanksgiving and Christmas windows when prices spike sharply.
For the best fares, book three to six weeks out and aim for Tuesday or Wednesday departures rather than Friday or Sunday. Early morning flights tend to be cheaper and, as a bonus, you'll land in LA with the whole day ahead of you. That's a gift on a trip this short — use every hour of it.
