The distance is real, but so is the payoff.
Mexico City operates at a scale and intensity that takes your breath away. The historic centre, known as the Centro Histórico, sits directly atop the ruins of Tenochtitlán, the ancient Aztec capital, and you can literally stand above that buried world at the Templo Mayor archaeological site. The city's museum culture is world-class — the National Museum of Anthropology in Chapultepec Park is widely considered one of the finest anthropological museums anywhere, and a single afternoon there barely scratches the surface. Neighbourhoods like Coyoacán and Roma Norte offer a slower, more intimate side of the city: tree-lined streets, excellent coffee, and the kind of street food that ruins you for anywhere else. Tacos al pastor, eaten standing at a taquería counter late at night, is a rite of passage you should repeat as often as possible.
From the airport, the metro connects to the city centre affordably and efficiently, though taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely used and generally reliable for those arriving with luggage or late at night. The city sits at high altitude — over 2,200 metres above sea level — so give yourself a day to acclimatise before going hard on sightseeing.
Timing matters on this route. Peak season runs December through January and again July through August, when fares climb and the city fills with visitors. If your schedule allows, the shoulder months offer a sweeter deal and a more relaxed experience. United Airlines, American Airlines, and Aeromexico are your main carriers on this route, and because options are limited, booking three to six months ahead is genuinely important rather than just good advice. A roundtrip under $900 represents excellent value here — standard fares push past $1,300 — so patience in the booking phase pays off handsomely. Flying mid-week and sidestepping both Mexican and Singaporean public holidays can shave costs significantly.
The one tip worth repeating: don't rush Mexico City. Build in at least a week. This is a destination that reveals itself slowly, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, meal by meal.
