Route Briefing: Sydney to Quito
Sydney to Quito is one of those routes that demands a little patience — a 22-hour journey with two stops — but the reward waiting at the other end makes every layover worthwhile. You're flying from one of the Southern Hemisphere's great coastal cities to one of its most extraordinary highland capitals, a UNESCO World Heritage city sitting at roughly 2,800 metres above sea level in the Andes. That altitude is the first thing Quito will tell you about itself, so take it easy on arrival and give your body a day to adjust before charging up any hills.
The city's historic centre is genuinely one of the best-preserved colonial old towns in the Americas. The churches alone could fill several days — La Compañía de Jesús, with its extraordinarily ornate baroque interior, is the kind of place that stops you mid-step. The streets are walkable, the plazas are lively, and the food scene leans heavily on Ecuadorian staples like llapingachos, ceviche, and slow-cooked stews that taste even better at altitude. Quito also sits right on the equator, and visiting the monument marking the middle of the world is a genuinely fun half-day trip from the city.
For many travellers, though, Quito is the launching pad for the Galápagos Islands — one of the most remarkable wildlife destinations on the planet. Flights to the islands depart from Quito, making this city a natural first stop on a broader Ecuadorian adventure.
On the fare side, this is a route where timing your booking matters. Aim to lock in tickets three to six months ahead, as the connection options are limited and prices climb quickly when seats thin out. A roundtrip under $900 is a genuinely good deal on this route — standard fares push well past $1,200. LATAM Airlines and Copa Airlines tend to offer the most competitive pricing, with routings through Santiago or Bogotá respectively. American Airlines is another option worth checking. Peak season runs June through August, which aligns with Quito's dry season and the best Galápagos weather, so expect higher fares and more competition for seats during those months. Travelling in the shoulder months either side can save you money without sacrificing too much on weather.
From Quito's Mariscal Sucre International Airport, the city centre is around 45 minutes away by road. Official airport taxis and pre-booked transfers are the straightforward options — worth arranging in advance, especially if you're arriving tired after a long haul from Sydney.
