Route Briefing: Amsterdam to Perth
Perth sits at the edge of the world in the best possible way — closer to Singapore than to Sydney, bathed in more sunshine than almost anywhere else on Earth, and still refreshingly uncrowded compared to Australia's east coast cities. Flying there from Amsterdam is genuinely an adventure in itself, clocking in at around 17 hours and 30 minutes with one stop, but the right layover can make the journey feel like a bonus destination rather than a chore. Routing through Singapore with Singapore Airlines or through Dubai with Emirates are both excellent choices — competitive on price, smooth on connections, and the hubs themselves are world-class if you have time to stretch your legs.
On fares, patience pays off handsomely here. Book three to six months ahead and you have a realistic shot at landing a roundtrip under $1,200 — a genuinely good deal for this distance. Leave it late and you're looking at $1,800 or more as a baseline. December and January are peak season, when Australians are on summer holiday and European visitors chase the warmth, so if you want lower fares and quieter beaches, the shoulder months on either side are worth considering.
Perth itself rewards the long haul immediately. The Indian Ocean coastline is extraordinary — wide, white, and wild in a way that feels almost cinematic. The city has a relaxed confidence about it, sun-soaked without being sleepy, with a thriving food and coffee culture that reflects its relative isolation and self-sufficiency. The Swan Valley and Margaret River wine regions are within easy reach and produce world-class wines, particularly Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. And then there's Rottnest Island, a short ferry ride offshore, where quokkas — small, perpetually smiling marsupials — wander freely among the bays and bike paths. It's one of those genuinely joyful wildlife experiences that lives up to the hype.
From Perth Airport, the city centre is accessible by train on the Airport Line, which is a straightforward and affordable option that drops you close to the heart of the CBD. It's worth knowing that Perth operates across multiple terminal buildings, so check which terminal your airline uses before you arrive.
The one tip that genuinely elevates this trip: if your budget allows, consider booking a business class upgrade just for the longest leg of the journey — Amsterdam to your hub city. Prices for that single segment can sometimes be surprisingly reasonable when booked separately, and arriving in Singapore or Dubai rested makes the final push to Perth feel effortless rather than exhausting.
