Route Briefing: Dubai to Delhi
Just three and a half hours separates the gleaming towers of Dubai from one of the world's most layered, overwhelming, and utterly unforgettable cities. Delhi isn't a destination you ease into — it grabs you immediately, and that's precisely the point. For travellers based in or passing through the UAE, this route is one of the most rewarding short-haul jumps in the region, and with round-trip fares available under $300 when you time it right, the value is hard to argue with.
Emirates, IndiGo, and Air India all serve the route year-round, giving you solid options across different price points and travel styles. To land those sub-$300 fares, book six to eight weeks ahead and keep a close eye on the calendar. Diwali and Holi are spectacular to experience in Delhi, but airfare surges significantly around both festivals, so either commit early or plan around them if budget is the priority.
The sweet spot for visiting is October through January, when Delhi's notorious heat finally relents and the city settles into something resembling comfortable. Winter mornings can be misty and cool, the parks fill with families, and the festival energy from autumn carries well into the new year. This is when Old Delhi's spice markets, the Red Fort, and the lanes around Chandni Chowk feel most alive without the punishing summer temperatures.
Speaking of Old Delhi — don't skip it. The contrast between the Mughal-era old city and the wide colonial boulevards of New Delhi is genuinely striking, and wandering between the two gives you a crash course in five thousand years of layered history. Humayun's Tomb, Qutb Minar, and the Jama Masjid are all essential, but leave time to simply get lost in the bazaars. Street food here — chaat, parathas, kebabs — is some of the best in the country.
On arrival, the Delhi Metro connects Indira Gandhi International Airport directly to the city centre, making it one of the more straightforward airport transfers in South Asia. It's fast, affordable, and far less stressful than negotiating traffic by road, especially during peak hours.
One tip worth remembering: if you're visiting in winter, pack a layer or two. Travellers from Dubai often underestimate how genuinely cold Delhi nights can get between December and February. Arriving prepared means you spend your first evening exploring rather than hunting for a jacket.
