At just over ten and a half hours nonstop, this is one of the more manageable transpacific crossings you'll find, and carriers like China Eastern, Air China, and Hainan Airlines run it year-round, giving you genuine flexibility on timing.
Shanghai rewards the curious traveler on multiple levels. Shanghai's food scene is serious business. Local specialties like xiaolongbao — those delicate soup dumplings — are worth seeking out at any number of spots in the city, and the broader range of regional Chinese cuisines available here is extraordinary. Street food around the Old City bazaar area is both affordable and genuinely delicious.
From Pudong International Airport, the Maglev train offers one of the most thrilling airport transfers on earth, whisking you toward the city center at speeds that feel genuinely absurd. From there, connecting to the metro system gets you almost anywhere you need to go efficiently and cheaply.
Timing matters on this route. June through August is peak season, and Chinese New Year in January or February brings enormous domestic travel surges that push fares well above the standard $900-plus roundtrip range. If you can find a deal under $600 roundtrip, that's genuinely excellent value for a direct transpacific flight — book two to four months ahead to give yourself the best shot at those fares. The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn offer milder weather and thinner crowds, making them arguably the smartest windows for a first visit.
