Route Briefing: London to Fiji
There are long-haul flights, and then there is the journey to Fiji — a 20-plus hour odyssey from London that asks a lot of you but repays every hour with interest. With two stops and around 20 hours 30 minutes in the air, this is genuinely one of the world's great commitment trips, which is exactly why the islands feel so rewarding when you finally step off the plane into that thick, warm Pacific air at Nadi International Airport.
Fiji is an archipelago of 333 islands scattered across the South Pacific, and the combination of volcanic peaks, coral reefs, and turquoise lagoons is as extraordinary as the photographs suggest — perhaps more so. But what genuinely sets Fiji apart from other tropical destinations is the people. The Fijian welcome, locally known as the spirit of Bula, is not a tourism slogan. Strangers greet you warmly on village paths, resort staff remember your name, and the sense of genuine hospitality is something most travellers carry home as their most vivid memory. The main island of Viti Levu is where you will land, and it offers everything from surf breaks and highland villages to the Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains, easily reached by fast ferry or small domestic flight.
Fiji Airways, Air New Zealand, and Qantas are the main carriers on this route, and routing through Los Angeles or Sydney can sometimes unlock better fares than connections via Auckland — worth checking when you search. A good deal sits under $1,400 roundtrip, while standard fares push past $1,900, so booking four to six months ahead is genuinely important here. Seat availability on this route is limited, and prices climb steeply as departure approaches.
Peak season runs July through August and again over December and January, when the dry, cooler months attract the most visitors and prices reflect that demand. The shoulder periods either side of the July peak offer a smart balance of decent weather and more manageable costs.
From Nadi airport, taxis and shuttle buses connect you to the resort areas along the Coral Coast and beyond, and the airport sits close enough to the main tourism corridor that transfers are straightforward. If you are island-hopping further out, the Yasawa Flyer ferry and small inter-island flights depart from or near Nadi, making it a logical base for your first night.
The one tip worth burning into your memory: if your budget allows, spend at least one night on one of the outer islands. The difference between Viti Levu and a small island resort — where the reef is steps from your bungalow and the stars are genuinely staggering — is the difference between visiting Fiji and truly experiencing it.
