Route Briefing: Mumbai to Crete
Flying from Mumbai to Crete is one of those journeys that rewards the effort entirely. Yes, you're looking at around 13 and a half hours in the air with a stop along the way, but what waits at the other end — Greece's largest island, soaked in mythology, ancient history, and some of the finest food in the Mediterranean — makes every hour worthwhile. Emirates routing through Dubai and Air Arabia connecting via Sharjah or Abu Dhabi are both solid options, though if you want a particularly smooth onward connection, consider Aegean Airlines via Athens. That Athens layover isn't just a transit — it's a bonus glimpse of Greece before you even reach the island.
Heraklion's Nikos Kazantzakis Airport sits close to the city, and taxis are readily available outside arrivals for the short ride into the centre. Public buses also connect the airport to the city, making it easy to get oriented without spending a fortune the moment you land.
Crete itself operates on a different rhythm to the rest of Europe. The island is home to the Palace of Knossos, the extraordinary Bronze Age site that was the heart of Minoan civilisation — one of the oldest and most sophisticated cultures in the ancient world. Beyond history, the landscape is genuinely dramatic: the Samaria Gorge in the White Mountains is one of Europe's longest gorges and a serious hike worth planning around. The beaches range from the famous pink sands of Elafonisi in the southwest to the palm-fringed lagoon at Vai in the east.
Then there's the food. Cretan cuisine is considered among the healthiest in the world, built on olive oil, fresh vegetables, legumes, grilled meats, and exceptional local cheeses. Eating well here is effortless and affordable, especially if you wander away from the main tourist strips into neighbourhood tavernas.
Peak season runs June through August, when the island is at its most vibrant but also its most crowded and expensive. If you're targeting summer, book your flights four to six months in advance — Heraklion sees very high demand during these months and good fares disappear quickly. A roundtrip under $700 from Mumbai represents genuine value on this route; standard fares push past $1,000, so early planning pays off directly.
The smartest timing tip: consider late May or September. The sea is warm, the crowds are thinner, accommodation prices drop noticeably, and the light across the island has a golden quality that photographers and slow travellers absolutely love. You get almost everything summer offers, with considerably more breathing room.
