Route Briefing: Paris to Queenstown
Paris to Queenstown is one of the great long-haul pilgrimages in travel — a journey from the world's most romanticised city to arguably its most dramatic natural playground. Yes, you're looking at 28-plus hours and at least two stops, but the moment you descend into Queenstown with the Remarkables mountain range framing Lake Wakatipu below you, every hour in the air makes complete sense.
On the fare side, anything under $1,800 roundtrip is genuinely worth jumping on. Standard pricing runs $2,500 to $3,500 or more, so the gap between a good deal and a mediocre one is significant. Air New Zealand, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines cover this route well, and routing through Dubai, Singapore, or Sydney tends to surface the most competitive fares. Book four to six months out if you can — this is not a route where last-minute deals are your friend.
Timing matters enormously here because Queenstown has two distinct peak seasons. December through February brings New Zealand summer — long days, hiking, lake swimming, and the famous Milford Sound day trips at their most accessible. June through August flips the script entirely, drawing skiers and snowboarders to the Remarkables and Coronet Peak. Both seasons are wonderful; both are busy. If you want the landscapes without the crowds, shoulder months like April or October offer a quieter, often cheaper experience with the autumn colours around the lake being genuinely spectacular.
Queenstown itself is compact and walkable once you're in town. The airport sits close to the centre, and taxis and shuttles make the transfer straightforward. The town punches well above its size — world-class restaurants, a lively bar scene, and the kind of energy that comes from a place where everyone around you has either just jumped off something very high or is about to. Bungee jumping was essentially invented here, and the original AJ Hackett site at Kawarau Bridge remains a pilgrimage for thrill-seekers. Beyond the adrenaline, the region is genuine Lord of the Rings country, with guided tours taking you through landscapes that doubled as Middle-earth.
The single best tip for this route: if you're routing through Singapore on Singapore Airlines, seriously consider breaking the journey there for a night or two. Changi Airport is exceptional, but Singapore the city is even better — and splitting a 28-hour journey into two manageable legs transforms the experience entirely without necessarily adding much to the overall cost.
