Route Briefing: Paris to Shanghai
There's something quietly thrilling about boarding a flight in Paris and landing in one of the world's most electrifying cities just eleven and a half hours later. No stopovers, no bleary-eyed layovers — Air France, China Eastern, and Air China all run direct services between CDG and Shanghai's Pudong International Airport, making this one of the more civilised long-haul connections you can make between Europe and East Asia.
Shanghai rewards the journey immediately. Step out onto the Bund and you're standing at one of the great urban spectacles on earth — a sweep of colonial-era European architecture facing off across the Huangpu River against the shimmering, science-fiction skyline of Pudong. The contrast is genuinely jaw-dropping, and it tells you everything about what Shanghai is: a city that has absorbed the world and made something entirely its own. Wander deeper into the old town to find Yu Garden, a classical Ming-dynasty retreat of rockeries, pavilions, and koi ponds that somehow holds its serenity even when surrounded by the city's relentless energy. For something more contemporary, the former French Concession neighbourhood offers tree-lined streets, independent boutiques, and excellent coffee — a reminder that Shanghai has always had a complicated, fascinating relationship with France specifically.
From Pudong Airport, the Maglev train is one of the most exhilarating airport transfers in the world, reaching speeds that will make your eyes widen before connecting you onward to the metro network into the city centre. It's fast, affordable, and frankly worth experiencing for its own sake.
Timing matters on this route. July and August are peak season — Shanghai is hot, humid, and busy, though the city's energy is undeniable. Spring, particularly April and May, offers milder weather and thinner crowds, making it arguably the best time to visit. Avoid booking around Chinese New Year in January or February and Chinese Golden Week in early October, when fares spike sharply and the city fills with domestic travellers.
On pricing, a roundtrip under $600 represents genuine value on this route — standard fares run $900 to $1,200 or more. Booking two to four months ahead consistently delivers the best results. One tip worth taking seriously: if you're flexible on departure airport, check both CDG and Orly, as pricing can differ meaningfully between them even on the same travel dates.
