Route Briefing: Toronto to Split
Few routes reward the effort quite like the haul from Toronto to Split. Yes, you're looking at around 14 and a half hours in the air with a stop along the way, but what's waiting on the other end is one of the Mediterranean's most genuinely extraordinary cities — a place where you don't just visit Roman history, you walk through it, eat dinner inside it, and sleep a short stroll from it.
Split's heart is Diocletian's Palace, a Roman emperor's retirement complex built around 300 AD that never stopped being lived in. Today it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site threaded with narrow limestone lanes, outdoor cafés, and local apartments. The Adriatic waterfront promenade, known as the Riva, runs right along its southern walls and is the kind of place where an evening stroll feels effortless and endlessly entertaining. From Split's ferry terminal you can reach the islands of Hvar, Brač, and Korčula — each with its own character, beaches, and pace of life — making the city an ideal base for island-hopping across the Dalmatian coast.
On the flight side, Air Canada, Lufthansa, and Austrian Airlines cover this route well, with connections typically routing through Frankfurt or Vienna. Those European hubs tend to produce the most competitive fares, so it's worth being flexible about which layover city you land in. A solid roundtrip deal comes in under $900 — anything in that range is genuinely worth jumping on. Standard pricing runs $1,200 to $1,600 or more, so the gap between a good fare and a mediocre one is significant. Because Split draws heavy summer crowds and seat availability tightens quickly, booking four to six months ahead for June through August travel is not just a suggestion — it's almost a necessity.
If you can travel in late May or early September, you'll find the Adriatic still warm, the crowds noticeably thinner, and the locals considerably more relaxed. The shoulder season also tends to bring lower accommodation prices, which compounds nicely with a cheaper flight.
From Split Airport, located a short distance from the city centre, bus and taxi connections into town are straightforward and well-established. Once you're in, the old town is almost entirely walkable, and the ferry connections to the islands are frequent throughout summer. Pack light if you can — those palace alleyways were not designed with rolling luggage in mind.
