Route Briefing: Amsterdam to Da Nang
Trading Amsterdam's grey canals for the turquoise waters of Vietnam's central coast is one of those travel decisions that feels immediately, obviously right the moment you land. The journey from AMS to Da Nang runs around 13 hours and 30 minutes with one stop, typically connecting through Bangkok, Singapore, or Hanoi — and that layover city alone can feel like a bonus destination if you time your connection generously. Vietnam Airlines, Thai Airways, and Singapore Airlines all serve this route, and if you catch a good deal, you're looking at under $700 roundtrip. Standard fares climb past $1,000, so booking two to four months ahead is genuinely worth the calendar reminder.
Da Nang sits at a sweet spot on Vietnam's coastline — close enough to Hoi An's ancient lantern-lit streets and Hue's imperial citadels to make day trips effortless, yet completely compelling on its own terms. My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO-listed cluster of ancient Cham temples set in a jungle valley, is within reach and unlike anything you'll find in Europe. The Marble Mountains — five limestone and marble hills rising dramatically from the coastal plain — offer caves, pagodas, and panoramic views that reward even a half-day visit. Then there's the Golden Bridge, that extraordinary pedestrian walkway held aloft by two giant stone hands in the Ba Na Hills, which has become one of Southeast Asia's most photographed structures for very good reason.
The beaches here are genuinely world-class. My Khe stretches for miles with calm, warm water and a relaxed atmosphere that hasn't been entirely swallowed by resort development. Da Nang's food scene leans heavily on central Vietnamese cuisine — think mi quang (turmeric noodles with pork and shrimp) and banh mi stuffed with local ingredients — and eating well is remarkably affordable compared to what you'd spend in Amsterdam.
Timing matters on this route. Peak season runs June through August when the weather is hot and dry, and again December through January when European winter makes the idea of beach weather almost irresistible. The shoulder months of March, April, and May offer a lovely balance of good weather and thinner crowds. Avoid October and November if you can — the central coast experiences its rainy and typhoon season then.
Da Nang's international airport sits right inside the city, which means you're at your hotel in under 20 minutes by taxi without any complicated transfers. That ease of arrival, combined with the sheer density of experiences within a short drive, makes this one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding long-haul investments from the Netherlands.
