Route Briefing: Amsterdam to Hiroshima
There are journeys that move you before you even land, and the flight from Amsterdam to Hiroshima is one of them. You'll spend around sixteen and a half hours in the air with a single stop — typically through Tokyo or Seoul — which sounds like a lot until you remind yourself what's waiting on the other side: one of the most quietly powerful cities on earth.
Hiroshima carries its history with extraordinary grace. The Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome are genuinely unmissable, not because every guidebook says so, but because standing there does something to you that no photograph can replicate. The city has rebuilt itself into a warm, modern, deeply liveable place, and that contrast — between what happened here and what Hiroshima has become — is the whole point. Give yourself proper time to absorb it rather than rushing through.
A short ferry ride from the city brings you to Miyajima Island, where the famous torii gate appears to float on the water at high tide. It's one of those sights that somehow exceeds expectations even when you've seen it a hundred times in pictures. The island also has free-roaming deer and forested hiking trails, so budget a full day if you can.
Don't leave without eating okonomiyaki, the savoury layered pancake that Hiroshima has made entirely its own. The local style — with noodles built into the layers — differs from the Osaka version, and locals are quietly passionate about the distinction. You'll find dedicated okonomiyaki restaurants throughout the city.
From Hiroshima Airport, limousine buses run directly into the city centre, making arrival straightforward. The city is also well connected by shinkansen if you're combining this trip with time in Kyoto, Osaka, or Tokyo.
On timing: late March to early April brings cherry blossom season, which is genuinely magical but comes with higher prices and bigger crowds. July and August are peak summer, warm and busy. For calmer conditions and lower fares, shoulder seasons like November — when autumn foliage is stunning — or late January through February are worth considering.
For the fare itself, anything under $900 roundtrip is a strong deal on this route; standard pricing runs $1,200 to $1,600 or more. KLM, JAL, and Korean Air are your most reliable options, with routings through Tokyo Haneda or Seoul Incheon typically offering the best value. Book three to five months out, and be flexible on your Tokyo or Seoul layover — sometimes adding a night there mid-journey turns a long connection into a bonus destination.
