Route Briefing: Houston to Da Nang
Getting from Houston to Da Nang is a serious journey — around 20 and a half hours in the air with one or two stops — but the moment you arrive on Vietnam's central coast, you'll understand exactly why people make the trip. This isn't a destination that requires much convincing once you're there.
United Airlines, Korean Air, and EVA Air are your main options out of IAH, and the routing matters more than most people realize. Connections through Seoul's Incheon Airport or Taipei's Taoyuan Airport tend to offer the most competitive fares and sensible layover windows, so prioritize those when you're comparing itineraries. A genuinely good deal lands under $700 roundtrip — that's the number to chase. Standard pricing runs $1,000 to $1,400 or more, so booking three to six months ahead isn't just advice, it's the difference between a bargain and an expensive lesson.
Da Nang sits in a sweet spot geographically, giving you access to some of central Vietnam's most celebrated experiences without the intensity of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. The beaches here are legitimately world-class — long, wide, and backed by the dramatic Marble Mountains, a cluster of limestone and marble hills riddled with caves and Buddhist sanctuaries that reward a half-day of exploration. The Golden Bridge, held aloft by two enormous stone hands in the Ba Na Hills, has become one of Vietnam's most photographed spots for good reason — it's genuinely surreal in person.
Da Nang International Airport sits right inside the city, which is a rare convenience. You're not fighting a long transfer after a 20-hour journey — taxis and ride-hailing apps can get you to the beach or city center in well under 30 minutes.
Timing your visit takes a little thought. June through August and late December into early January are peak periods, bringing higher prices and more crowds. The shoulder months on either side of peak season offer a compelling trade-off: lower fares, fewer tourists, and still very manageable weather. The central Vietnamese coast does have a distinct rainy season, so checking conditions for your specific travel window is worthwhile.
One tip that genuinely elevates the trip: use Da Nang as your base but build in a day trip to Hoi An, the lantern-lit ancient town about 30 kilometers south. It's one of the most atmospheric places in all of Southeast Asia, and the proximity makes it almost irresponsible not to go.
