Oia, perched at the northern tip, draws crowds every evening for its sunset, and the crowds are worth pushing through at least once. Fira, the capital, has more energy and better access to the caldera edge for casual wandering. The volcanic beaches — Perissa and Perivolos with their striking black sand, Kamari nearby — are a genuinely different beach experience from anything you'd find on a typical Greek island.
Flying from London, easyJet, Jet2, and British Airways all operate this route seasonally, with direct services making the journey straightforward. On arrival at Santorini's Thira airport, public buses connect to Fira town, and taxis and transfer services cover the rest of the island, though it's worth arranging accommodation transfers in advance during peak months when demand is high.
Timing is everything here. The route is heavily seasonal and summer-heavy, with June through September being peak season. July and August bring the biggest crowds and the sharpest prices — both for flights and accommodation. If you can travel in June or early September, you'll find the weather still excellent, the island noticeably quieter, and your wallet considerably happier. Booking four to six months ahead for summer travel is genuinely important on this route; fares climb steeply after March and good deals disappear quickly. A roundtrip under $250 represents real value — standard fares push $450 and beyond once demand kicks in.
The single best tip for this route: fly mid-week. Santorini is a weekend-getaway magnet for travellers across Europe, so Saturday departures from London carry a premium that Tuesday or Wednesday flights simply don't. Combine a mid-week flight with a June travel window and you've essentially unlocked a different, calmer version of one of the world's most famous islands — same sunsets, fewer selfie sticks.
