Route Briefing: Los Angeles to Cartagena
From the Pacific coast of Los Angeles to the Caribbean coast of Colombia, this route drops you into one of South America's most intoxicating cities — and at under $450 roundtrip if you time it right, it's one of the better-value tropical escapes you can book out of LAX.
The flight runs around nine and a half hours with a stop, typically connecting through Bogotá or Panama City. Avianca, Copa Airlines, and American Airlines all service this route, and connecting through Panama City with Copa or through Bogotá with Avianca tends to produce the most competitive fares and manageable layovers. Book two to four months ahead and you'll have a real shot at those sub-$450 tickets — wait until the last minute and you're looking at $700 or more.
Cartagena rewards the moment you step outside the airport. The city's old walled center, known as the Ciudad Amurallada, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking its cobblestone streets feels genuinely cinematic — bougainvillea spilling over colonial balconies, horse-drawn carriages navigating narrow lanes, and the warm Caribbean air carrying the smell of street food at every corner. The walls themselves, built by the Spanish over centuries, are best experienced at sunset when the light turns everything golden and the rooftop bars fill up with a mix of locals and travelers.
Beyond the old city, the Rosario Islands offer some of the clearest water in the Caribbean and are easily reachable by boat from Cartagena's port. Even a day trip out there feels like a different world entirely.
Timing matters here. Peak season runs December through January and again June through July, when the city is buzzing but prices climb accordingly. If you want the atmosphere without the crowds and the premium fares, shoulder months like March, April, or November can offer a sweet spot — the Caribbean warmth stays, but the tourist pressure eases.
One genuinely useful tip: once you land at Rafael Núñez International Airport, the old city is only a few kilometers away. Taxis are readily available outside the terminal and the ride is short, making arrival refreshingly painless compared to many major destinations. Negotiate or confirm the fare before you get in, as is standard practice across Colombia.
Cartagena is one of those cities that earns its reputation completely. The combination of history, color, Caribbean coastline, and increasingly vibrant food and nightlife scene makes this route well worth the nine-hour journey from LA.
