Few routes from Mumbai open up a world quite as dramatically different as the flight west to Casablanca. At around 14 and a half hours with one stop, it's a genuine journey — but the reward is stepping into a city that feels like nowhere else on earth, where French colonial boulevards meet Arabic medinas and the Atlantic breeze carries the scent of spice markets. For Indian travellers, this is one of the more underappreciated gateways into Africa and the Arab world combined.
Royal Air Maroc, Air Arabia, and Emirates all serve this route, and the smart money is on connecting through Dubai or Sharjah rather than routing through a European hub. Those Gulf connections consistently offer better fares, and if you can snag a roundtrip under $700, you're doing very well — standard pricing tends to sit above $1,000, so a little patience and planning goes a long way. Book two to four months ahead for the best chance at those lower fares.
Casablanca itself is Morocco's commercial heartbeat — less overtly touristy than Marrakech, but richer for it in many ways. The Hassan II Mosque is genuinely one of the most breathtaking pieces of architecture on the planet, built dramatically over the Atlantic Ocean and open to non-Muslim visitors on guided tours, which is relatively rare for mosques of this scale in the region. The old medina, the art deco architecture scattered through the city centre, and the Corniche along the coast all reward slow, curious exploration on foot.
The city's food scene leans heavily on fresh seafood given its port location, alongside Moroccan classics like tagine and couscous. The café culture here is strong — Casablanca takes its coffee seriously, and sitting at a pavement café watching the city move is one of the great free pleasures of the place.
Timing matters. Peak season runs June through August when the weather is warm and the city is lively, but this also means higher fares and more crowds. Shoulder months like April, May, and October offer pleasant temperatures and noticeably quieter streets — genuinely excellent conditions for exploring.
From Mohammed V International Airport, trains connect directly into the city centre, making arrival refreshingly straightforward compared to many African cities. It's reliable, affordable, and drops you close to the main action without the negotiation fatigue of taxi ranks.
One tip worth remembering: Casablanca is an ideal base rather than just a destination. Marrakech, Fez, and Rabat are all accessible by train, meaning you can use those cheap flights into CMN and build a much wider Moroccan adventure from there.
