Flying from Singapore: what you need to know
Changi Airport consistently ranks as the world's best airport, and the fare environment matches the infrastructure. Singapore's position as a Southeast Asian hub means fierce competition on routes across Asia, Oceania, and increasingly to Europe.
Singapore Airlines is the flag carrier and premium product leader, but budget options punch hard here. Scoot (SIA's budget arm), AirAsia, Jetstar Asia, and Vietjet compete on regional routes across Southeast Asia and Australia. Bangkok, Bali, and Kuala Lumpur can run under SGD 100 roundtrip on budget carriers.
The Europe market from Singapore benefits from Singapore Airlines' fifth freedom routing and multiple Gulf carriers competing. SIA's direct flights to London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Zurich are premium-priced but frequently go on sale. For budget Europe, routing via Doha (Qatar Airways), Abu Dhabi (Etihad), or Colombo (SriLankan Airlines) can drop prices significantly.
Australia routes from Changi are highly competitive. Scoot to Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth offers bare-bones fares from SGD 200 one-way. Jetstar adds competition. SIA to Australia in premium economy is excellent value when on sale.
Japan is another strong corridor. SIA, Scoot, ANA, JAL, and Peach all connect Changi to Tokyo and Osaka. Cherry blossom season prices spike 50%+ so book by November for spring travel.
Singapore's duty-free shopping adds a unique twist — some travelers intentionally route through Changi for the shopping alone. The airport's Jewel complex with the indoor waterfall makes long layovers genuinely enjoyable.
Cheapest months: February-March and September-October outside Chinese New Year and school holidays.
