Flying from Amsterdam: what you need to know
Schiphol is KLM's home base and one of Europe's most efficient airports — a single-terminal design that makes connections painless. For outbound travelers, this efficiency translates to a smooth departure experience and excellent nonstop coverage across the Atlantic, Africa, and Asia.
KLM-Delta's transatlantic joint venture is the pricing backbone here. Nonstops to New York, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Detroit, Salt Lake City, Portland, and more — with fares that frequently dip below €350 roundtrip for North America. The joint venture means fare sales alternate between KLM and Delta branding, so check both.
Budget European carriers are where Schiphol gets interesting. Transavia (KLM's budget subsidiary) operates from Amsterdam to Mediterranean destinations, Canary Islands, and North Africa. Vueling, EasyJet, and Wizz Air add routes to Southern and Eastern Europe. Fares of €30-60 each way are standard.
The intercontinental network from Amsterdam covers former Dutch colonial connections — Suriname, Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, and South Africa get direct KLM service that's often cheaper than routing through London or Paris. The KLM Curaçao route is a highlight: sub-€500 roundtrips to the Caribbean.
Asia coverage is strong. KLM flies nonstop to Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Bangkok, and Jakarta. The Indonesian routes reflect the Netherlands' historical ties — KLM to Jakarta is one of the cheapest Europe-to-Indonesia options.
Cheapest windows: January-March for long-haul, October-November for intra-Europe. Avoid King's Day (April 27) and summer school holidays (July-August).
